FAQ

What is a Jacob’s ladder?

Answer

A Jacob’s ladder is made up of wooden rungs and ropes. It is a roll-up ladder that hangs freely down the side of the vessel and is used for example by a pilot to board the ship.

How does a floating dry dock work?

Answer

First the dock is flooded and submerges enough to allow a ship to sail in. Then the water is pumped out of the tanks and the floating dock rises, lifting the ship out of the water. In this way work can be carried out underneath the ship’s hull.

What is a “fastmoker”?

Answer

A “fastmoker” (belayer) moors a ship to bollards on the quay or to dolphins. The ship’s mooring lines are handled from the towing boat or from the quay wall.
