Ore and Coal

Ore and Coal

Ore and coal are of great importance for the German power supply branch and steel industry.

They are imported from Scandinavia, Brazil, South Africa and Australia via Hamburg.

Bulk cargo that is not transhipped by rail, feeder ships, or barges is held in open storage areas for later transport.

Handling is automated for the most part in the various terminals. Laser scanners and satellite-based positioning systems enable the port’s conveyor systems to carry bulk cargo from the ships’ holds right to the stockpiles.

Loading ore or coal onto railcars is also automated. The locomotives are given commands by radio, so that they pull the train under the silos at just the right speed for automatic loading.

Modern material handling facilities and innovative technology guarantee fast and efficient service for bulk cargo.
